Short-term study abroad programs for 2018 announced

The Office of International Programs will offer six short-term study abroad programs during the winter, spring and summer breaks of 2018.

Program destinations include Austria, Belize, the Dominican Republic, Ireland, Italy and Morocco and programs range in length from two to eight weeks. Detailed information about courses, faculty, program highlights, inclusions, application deadlines and costs can be found on the short-term study abroad webpage, where the online application for all programs is also available.

Salve Regina faculty and Office of International Programs staff will offer program-specific information sessions in the coming weeks.

The schedule is:

  • Belize – 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4 in Drexel Hall
  • Morocco – 1:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5 in Drexel Hall
  • Ireland – 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 in Miley Hall, executive dining room
  • Dominican Republic – 1:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12 in Drexel Hall
  • Austria – 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16 in Angelus Hall, Room 106
  • Verona – 1:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 in Drexel Hall

Students interested in short-term programs or the University’s more than 200 semester program options may also attend a general information session run by student global ambassadors every weekday at 4 p.m. in Drexel Hall.

University community invited to Fall Festival Weekend events

Members of the Salve Regina community are invited to join alumni, parents and friends for a wide variety of activities related to Fall Festival Weekend, which begins Friday, Sept. 29 and wraps up Sunday, Oct. 1. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to participate in any or all weekend events.

Friday, Sept. 29

  • Kickoff dinner – 5 p.m., Miley Hall cafeteria (standard cafeteria admission paid at the door). Kick off Fall Festival weekend with dinner in Miley, featuring an Italian theme and cuisine.
  • Murder mystery – 7 p.m., Wakehurst. An entertaining evening for all ages, beginning with a dessert bar followed by a night of comedy and crime. Seating is limited so please register in advance.
  • Hunger Concert – 8 p.m., Ochre Court, $5 for general admission, free for children under 12. Rock out against hunger as you enjoy students’ musical performances while helping to support local soup kitchens.
  • Young alumni homecoming – 9 p.m., O’Brien’s Pub. What better way to get the weekend started than a reception at O’Brien’s Pub? Complimentary appetizers and cash bar.

Saturday, Sept. 30

  • Family brunch – 9-11 a.m., Ochre Court, $10 for adults, free for children 5 and under. All families are welcome to enjoy this brunch buffet and cash bar.
  • Women’s volleyball vs. Worcester State University – 9:30 a.m., Rodgers Recreation Center.
  • 14th annual Fall Festival awards ceremony – 10:30 a.m., Bazarsky Lecture Hall. The ceremony honors and acknowledges academic achievement, career success and those that live the University mission.

Athletics
Tennis clinic for local youth set for Sunday

In honor of Meghan Strathman ’03, a women’s tennis player who died in a car accident in April 2003 – one month before her graduation – the 14th annual Megs Doubles tennis clinic for area youth will be held Sunday, Oct. 1 at the Leroy Avenue tennis courts. Registration will begin at 12:45 p.m.

The event connects the two passions that Strathman held so dearly: tennis and children. An outstanding member of the Seahawk women’s tennis team for three years, she earned recognition for her commitment to academic and athletic excellence, and her contributions to the overall development of the athletics program, with the Brother Michael Reynolds Award in 2002.

Strathman was a student teacher at the former Coggeshall Elementary School in Newport before her untimely death, and students from Coggeshall and other area schools have attended previous Megs Doubles clinics.

Participants are asked to wear athletic clothing, including sneakers. Youth racquets will be available courtesy of Wal-Mart or participants may bring their own.

Roundtable focusing on rights, duties of African-American athletes

The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy will explore the rights, duties and perils of African-American athletes during a roundtable discussion scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26 in the Miley Hall executive dining room.

NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick began protesting the national anthem during the 2016 preseason, first by sitting, then by kneeling as it played. The protest was Kaepernick’s way of speaking out against what he saw as the mistreatment of his fellow African Americans and his solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

A year later, Kaepernick finds himself the object of both ridicule and praise. He also finds himself out of a job. His protest recalls past protests by athletes and raises questions about the rights and responsibilities of those in the public eye.

Dr. Craig Condella, associate professor in the Department of Philosophy, will moderate the discussion. Roundtable discussions are open to Salve Regina students, faculty and staff, and lunch is provided. Seahawks take titles at Blazer Classic

Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams captured the team championship at the Elms Blazer Cross Country Classic last Saturday, marking the first time in program history that both teams have won an invitational race on the same day.

Men’s cross country

The win marks the first invitational championship for the men’s cross country team since the program was reconstituted in 2005, and the first men’s cross country win of any kind since 1987.

Scott Brewer ’18 led the charge for the Seahawks, finishing second overall as one of only two men in the field to break 30 minutes on the challenging, technical 8,000-meter course. The other Seahawk scorers were Aidan Lynch ’21 (third), Andrew Sardelli ’18 (fifth), Dave Napierkowski ’18 (seventh) and Dan Donnelly ’19 (ninth).

“I’m proud of the guys. We’ve been aiming for an invitational win for a long time,” said head coach Rob McGuinness. “Our execution today was right on the mark. While a difficult course meant slower-than-normal times, we put ourselves in a position to win, and we finished the job.”

Women’s cross country

Alex Demeo ’19, Olivia Wilson ’18 and Olivia Owen ’20 finished first, second and third overall. The trio took the early lead against the field of 64 runners, splitting the first mile in 5:54 before encountering some of the more challenging terrain on the 6,000-meter course.

Demeo crossed the finish line in 25 minutes to claim her first individual collegiate win, with Wilson and Owen one and two seconds behind. Alexa Cipkas ’18 finished eighth overall, and Cianna Lynch ’19 rounded out the scoring.

“We executed very well on our race plan today. I was pleased to see our packs communicating and working together throughout the race,” McGuinness said. “Given the challenging course layout, this was not the day to expect a personal-best time. Our focus was on running for position, and we got the job done.”

Salve Regina returns to action Sept. 30 at the Tri-State Invitational in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

Faculty recognized as Presidential, Antone award winners

President Jane Gerety, RSM has announced this year’s recipients of the Presidential Faculty Award and the Sister M. Therese Antone Academic Excellence Award.

Presidential Faculty Award winners include Dr. Anthony Mangieri, associate professor in the Department of Art and Art History, and Dr. Margaret Svogun, professor in the Department of English and Communications. The Sister M. Therese Antone Academic Excellence Award was presented to Dr. JD Swanson, associate professor and chairman in the Department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences; and Dr. Sean O’Callaghan, assistant professor in the Department of Religious and Theological Studies; while a collaboration between Mangieri and Ernest Jolicoeur, assistant professor in the Department of Art and Art History, received special projects recognition.

“It’s particularly gratifying for me to recognize the great work being done by our faculty,” Sister Jane said. “You are scholars and teachers who are incredibly passionate about ensuring that our students get the education they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. I congratulate these award-winning faculty who are proving every day that Salve Regina is indeed a very special place.”

Mangieri is awarded a one-course reduction for one semester during 2018-2019 to support his work in expanding the University’s art history course offerings to embrace non-western art, adopting a more global perspective. He said the course reduction will allow him to revise existing courses and develop new ones that will align the curriculum more closely with the goals of the department’s learning objectives, the University’s academic and religious missions, best practices in the field, and recommendations from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

“I want to ensure that our students are exposed to artistic traditions and accomplishments beyond the western canon,” he says. “To truly understand a civilization’s art, one has to study its broader culture, including subjects like religion, philosophy, literature and economics.”

Svogun also receives a one-course reduction for one semester in 2018-2019 to support her project to analyze J.D. Salinger’s “Catcher in the Rye” through the lens of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory regarding the significance of individual language use. Svogun has published articles and given conference presentations on Salinger’s classic work over the course of several years, and most recently has become interested in the way he exploits the idea of varying speech patterns and the expectations and stereotypes that can arise from judgments about a person’s use of language and style of speech.

“J.D. Salinger is widely recognized for his skill in creating the convincing voice of Holden Caulfield, the narrator of his classic novel,” Svogun says. “However, the focus on Holden has often led readers to overlook the effect of multiple other powerfully realistic voices present in the novel; the narrative consists mainly of a series of about 26 conversations that Holden has with various people he encounters, and whose voices he faithfully records and often even comments on directly, noting their speech patterns, vocabulary, and verbal markers of class, education, age and gender. Salinger repeatedly reminds us of the degree to which one’s voice creates one’s ‘self’.”

Swanson receives a $5,000 recognition award for excellence in teaching and dedication to the University. Earlier this month, he started a new position as program director at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C., while remaining on the Salve faculty, where he has served since 2011.

He teaches a variety of classes, including Human Anatomy and Physiology for non-majors and Developmental Biology. He has a research lab that works primarily on cell-cell communication using raspberry and blackberry prickles, human stomach cancer cells and algal blooms as models. And he has been involved in the sport of shotokan karate since 1980, founding several shotokan clubs along the east coast, including at Salve Regina.

O’Callaghan receives $5,000 to research and visit top institutions in the U.S., and attend conferences on research in the area of religion and advanced/emerging technologies with particular emphasis on social ethics.

Last fall, he presented a TEDxNewport talk on “Redesigning Humans,” an examination of his research exploring technology and its impact on the human body and mind. Teaching primarily in the field of world religions, O’Callaghan regularly introduces his research into his classes to get students thinking about these issues and viewing religion as something dynamic and relevant. Religion, he says, does have a voice in this debate, and will have to speak to a world where technology is rapidly advancing and challenging what it means for us to be human.

“Most religious people believe that we are made in the image of God,” he says, “so in what many are predicting to be a post-human world, what will religion have to say to society?”

Mangieri and Jolicoeur receive a $5,000 special projects award for their work to develop a natural wonders collection and library in the Antone Academic Center, Room 101, an “underutilized space” that features “turn of the century, floor to ceiling glass-fronted bookcases lining an entire wall.” In addition to specimens, objects and books that could be housed within the glass projects, Mangieri and Jolicoeur hope to enliven the space by framing prints and student work on the walls.

The idea for the project was the direct result of research developed during a course they co-taught last term on Curatorial Practices and the Gallery Experience. “A natural history collection would allow students to study objects at first hand, to privilege experiential, visual learning,” the two write in their proposal. “Students would learn about the world through visual study and inspection.”

McKillop Library celebrates Banned Books Week

In honor of the American Library Association’s Banned Books Week, McKillop Library will host several events during the week of Sept. 25. Banned Books Week is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of books and novels that are banned or challenged in schools nationwide.

Activities include a discussion regarding “Dirty Pictures: Gender, Sexuality and the Censorship of Books.” Hosted by Dr. Anthony Mangieri and Susannah Strong, the discussion will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27 in the east wing of the library. Mangieri is an associate professor and Strong is an assistant professor in the Department of Art and Art History. The discussion will be centered on the censorship of novels such as David Levithan’s “Two Boys Kissing,” Mariko Tamaki’s “This One Summer” and R. Crumb’s “Genesis,” among others.

The library is hosting two additional events celebrating freedom of literary expression. They are:

  • “Blind Date with a Banned Book,” scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25 in the Miley Hall lobby. During this event, members of the University community can check out popular banned books and learn the the reasoning as to why these novels have been banned or challenged in schools.
  • Salve Regina’s performing arts community will tackle the topic of freedom of expression using song, poetry, dance and more during an ArtsSlam scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27 in the Wakehurst rose garden (rain location: McKillop Library first floor).

Career Connections Night to explore fields of accounting, finance

Experienced alumni and professionals working in a variety of accounting and financial roles will share their experiences during a Career Connections Night scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25 in the Young Building ballroom.

The program will include a moderated question-and-answer session, roundtable discussions and a networking reception. Open to all majors, the evening is designed to help students become better prepared for careers by hearing firsthand advice.

Career Connections Night is sponsored by the Department of Business Studies and Economics and the Office of Career Development. Dress is business casual. Prior registration through Career Hub is appreciated.

SGA announces environmentally conscious initiatives

Based on feedback from Salve Regina’s student body, the Student Government Association’s environmental committee has announced several student-driven initiatives for the current academic year.

“There are a lot of environmentally conscious clubs on campus,” said Victoria Johnson ’19, chairwoman of the environmental committee. “This was a great opportunity to unite the clubs under one umbrella and work together with faculty and staff.”

In an effort to reduce plastic consumption on campus, the committee is installing Brita water filter faucet systems in seven sophomore residence halls, including Founders Hall, Wallace Hall, William Watts Sherman House and the Young Building. If this pilot program proves successful, it could eventually be expanded to include junior/senior residence halls and on-campus apartments.

Another initiative is a paper towel reduction campaign, which consists of posters being placed in campus bathrooms in which paper towels are found, such as McKillop Library, Rodgers Recreation Center and Wakehurst. The posters include graphics and statistics encouraging students to reduce waste.

In the future, Johnson said, SGA is aiming to place more recycling bins on campus and raise awareness of how to properly recycle. The environmental committee is also exploring new ways to reduce waste in the Miley cafeteria, such as the addition of compost bins.

SGA solicits student feedback through survey boxes placed at different events throughout the academic year. Students are also encouraged to submit feedback and concerns to their SGA senator, or stop by the SGA office located on the second floor of Wakehurst.

Salve Regina welcomes Fulbright language teaching assistants

Marion Gayraud of France and Douglas Lopez of Venezuela are teaching foreign languages at Salve Regina, living on campus in the Language House and taking courses at the University as Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program recipients for 2017-2018.

In addition to their classroom work, Gayraud and Lopez will facilitate weekly language tables for members of the campus community and the public, will screen weekly film nights and will introduce foreign language instruction with assistance from Salve undergraduates for elementary school students at Newport’s Pell Elementary School.

When applying for the Fulbright program, both Gayraud and Lopez selected Salve Regina as their first choice, primarily because its on-campus Language House enhances opportunities for cultural exchange. Students currently living there have backgrounds from Syria, Germany, Peru, Chile, Ecuador and the U.S.

“The other universities did not propose a Language House immersion program for students,” Gayraud said. “Learning a language at the university is not enough. You need to practice outside class. The Language House is the best way to practice in a different way; you can practice normal daily life conversation.”

Gayraud, a French native, is bilingual in Spanish and English. She has lived and studied in Spain and London and taught French at a primary school in the Czech Republic. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a master’s degree in international relations with a specialization in terrorism. “I would like to work in diplomacy so the Fulbright program was a very good opportunity for me because I can share my French culture and at the same time learn the American culture,” she said.

Lopez has been teaching English at the university level in Venezuela for seven years. He has a bachelor’s degree in teaching English as a foreign language and a master’s degree in higher education. “I love helping people learn for life. That’s my vision,” he said. “Being a teacher has been the most amazing challenge and Fulbright has changed my life. I see things in a different way than I did in the past. I love sharing my heritage, and I was so excited when I received the good news that Salve Regina would be my host university.”

Language tables: Informal French and Spanish conversation tables are open to anyone in the community at large, and are offered in the lobby area outside Global Cafe on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Mondays, French is offered at noon and Spanish is offered at 1 p.m. On Wednesdays, Spanish is offered at noon and French is offered at 1 p.m.

Topics are circulated prior to each session to help participants prepare basic vocabulary. “We try to talk about topics of our daily life, hobbies, the weather, shopping, the environment, family … something that is familiar with them,” Lopez said.

Movie nights will start in October and be held at 7 p.m. on the first three Thursdays of each month at the Language House. A Spanish movie will be screened on the first Thursday, a French movie will be screened on the second Thursday and an Italian movie will be screened on the third Thursday. Afterward, participants are invited to stay for a debate.
