Hurricane Harvey, the strongest hurricane to hit the U.S. since Charley in 2004, has caused catastrophic flooding in Texas. As a result, the Office of Community Service has organized an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to help those affected by the storm.

Members of the University community are encouraged to donate diapers, wipes, bottles or unused baby/children’s clothing and blankets, which will be sent to the Texas Diaper Bank.

Monetary donations will also be accepted to cover the cost of shipping these items to the Texas Diaper Bank. Checks should be made payable to Salve Regina University with “Harvey” in the memo. Please note that these donations are not tax deductible.

Donation boxes are located in the Mercy Center, the Office of Community Service and residence halls. Donations will be accepted through Friday, Sept. 15.

Six hundred incoming freshmen who are arriving in Newport from 21 different states and eight countries – including Bangladesh, Canada, China, Colombia, El Salvador, Japan, Nepal and the United Kingdom – will be officially welcomed to the city and into the Salve Regina community when the University celebrates Convocation Tuesday, Sept. 5.

The ceremony, which begins at 3 p.m. in the Convocation tent on the Wakehurst lawn, will feature a keynote address from William “Bill” Lucey, publisher of the Edward A. Sherman Publishing Company, which produces the Newport Daily News, Newport Mercury, Newport Life Magazine, South County Life Magazine, the South County Independent and NewportRI.com. Lucey will also receive an honorary degree during the festivities.

Newport Mayor Henry Winthrop will welcome students, and remarks will be presented by President Jane Gerety, RSM. The ceremony will also include the inauguration of Student Government Association officers.

New students will discover how the University will be applying its vision through community and civic engagement during their next four years. That vision strives to develop empathetic leaders who challenge themselves “to achieve academic excellence through disciplined development of skills and knowledge, and to cultivate the spirit of Mercy within – to see, care, and to act for the good of others.”

As part of its civic action plan, the University community has coordinated prioritization of the five critical concerns of the Sisters of Mercy (earth, immigration, women, racism and non-violence). During a four-year cycle, each year will focus on a different critical concern, with an underlying baseline of non-violence. For 2017-2018, the focus will be on race.

J. David Arnold, who has an extensive background not only in his discipline of psychology but also in academic leadership, was recently named interim provost for the 2017-2018 academic year. His appointment officially began Aug. 30.

Arnold joins the Salve Regina community after serving for 11 years as president of Eureka College, followed by an additional year as that institution’s chancellor and president emeritus.

Under Arnold’s leadership, Eureka achieved record enrollment, $35 million in private donor support and more than 30 new endowed scholarships. He oversaw more than $30 million in campus improvements, including the construction of a new residence hall, a new classroom/laboratory building and a renovated gym transformed into an arena and convocation center. Other achievements include the creation of visiting scholar, artist and executive programs.

Arnold formerly was vice president for academic and student affairs at Missouri Western State University. He also served as provost at St. John Fisher College and as a dean and grants officer at Clarion University. He started his academic career as a professor teaching psychology and writing at St. Lawrence University.

As an academic leader and author, Arnold has focused on learning communities, strategic planning and promoting the “teacher-scholar” model of faculty professional development at liberal arts institutions.

A native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and the first in his family to graduate from college, Arnold completed his undergraduate degree with honors at Bloomsburg University, graduate degrees at the University of New Hampshire and post-doctoral study at the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University.

Arnold will host a coffee and doughnuts open house for all Salve Regina employees from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8 in the Academic Affairs suite in McAuley Hall.

User Support Services is hosting a series of workshops introducing students, faculty and staff to the features of Windows 10, the newest Microsoft operating system. Windows 10 was recently added to public computers on campus, including those in classrooms and the McKillop Library.

Salve Regina’s digital viewbook, thisissalve.com, recently received a 2017 Gold Circle of Excellence Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in the individual sub-website category, competing against 109 entries.

The website was produced by the offices of Digital Communications and Admissions in partnership with TWG Plus, and also recently won an EDU Digital Marketing Award.

Through the voices of current students, the website reveals to prospective students who Salve Regina is and what the University offers in an interactive fashion. Current students actively contribute content so that prospective students can follow them on Instagram and hear directly from them about Salve.

Fifteen judges made up the jury panel for the CASE awards. The panel noted that thisissalve.com “is a fantastic example of an innovative, user-centric, mobile-first approach to a digital viewbook. The audience is immediately asked to interact with the site to produce content showing fun and informative profiles of real students.”
