Established as the national mercy honor society in 1951, Sigma Phi Sigma promotes the values of scholarship, fidelity and service to the community. Students who are accepted to Sigma Phi Sigma promise to uphold these values and carry forward the tradition and practices of mercy in their studies, profession and vocation.
Senior Pinning Ceremony
On Sunday, April 10, Sigma Phi Sigma recognized its graduating seniors at the Senior Pinning Ceremony. MaryAnne Davey, director of the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life, led the invocation; Samantha Levey ’22, president of Sigma Phi Sigma, shared a welcome; Dr. Theresa Ladrigan-Whelpley, vice president for mission integration, blessed the pins and cords; and Regina Dublin, lecturer in the nursing department, shared her thoughts as keynote speaker.
Dr. Ladrigan-Whelpley and Mary Beth Pelletier ’06, (M) ’12, program manager for mission integration, recognized graduating seniors Samantha Levey ’22 and Hannah Harlow ’22 for their leadership as past president and vice president of Sigma Phi Sigma.
The executive board of Sigma Phi Sigma for the 2022-2023 academic year will be installed at the induction ceremony. Its newest executive board members are: Sarah Belling ’23, president; Shawn Quinn ’23, vice president; Hannah Rossman ’23, secretary; Jillian Gaffga ’23, treasurer; and Sarah Holcolm ’24, public relations.
Applications are open
In its 71st year as a society, Sigma Phi Sigma is looking for applicants and nominations. Applicants must be full-time students with a minimum of 12 credits a semester, as well as a rising sophomore, junior or senior and must have two remaining semesters at Salve Regina before graduation. To fulfill the three pillars of Sigma Phi Sigma — scholarship, fidelity and service — applicants must have a 3.4 cumulative GPA, evidence of upholding the mission and values of Salve Regina, and clearly demonstrate a commitment to volunteer service to the university and/or community.
Each member is required to attend monthly meetings, complete required community service each semester, support certain University events and attend academic events.
If a staff or faculty member who has a student they’d like to nominate for Sigma Phi Sigma, please email sigma@salve.edu with the student’s full name, year of graduation and reasoning for recommendation. The executive board will reach out to all nominated students and invite them to apply for membership to Sigma Phi Sigma.
If a student who is interested in applying to Sigma Phi Sigma, they are encouraged to do so by completing this online application no later than June 15. Students do not need a nomination to apply. For any questions, please email sigma@salve.edu.
