Mock car crash puts focus on dangers of impaired driving

Salve Regina’s EMT Club will host its annual mock car crash at noon Tuesday, April 17 in front of McAuley Hall.

Designed to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted and impaired driving, the event simulates a DUI accident and includes responders from the Newport police and fire departments. Each year, Rhode Island Towing donates a totaled car, allowing both departments to demonstrate how they respond to an actual crash.

Access to the Misto Gatehouse and McAuley Hall parking areas will be shut down between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Tuesday due to the event.

The EMT Club promotes the knowledge, understanding and interest of emergency medicine through lectures, events and activities geared to students’ interests. The club has hosted multiple CPR, first aid and defibrillator courses; management of aggressive behavior training; and lectures on tactical combat casualty care.

The club has been a recognized student organization since 2015. The executive board includes:

Alumna to discuss career opportunities in health care, marketing

Salve Regina alumna Maeve Shaughnessy will return to campus this week to discuss career opportunities in health care, marketing and beyond. Her presentation will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 17 in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall.

Running a hospital expands far beyond the operating and emergency rooms. Shaughnessy will explore a wide variety of career paths in health care administration, including finance, human resources and development. Not sure about health care? Learn about the many opportunities in the marketing industry, in both the nonprofit and private sector.

Shaughnessy is a marketing and communications specialist at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital in Vermont. She received her bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2015 and her MBA in 2016.

Light refreshments will be served. Shaughnessy’s presentation is sponsored by the Accounting and Finance Club and the American Marketing Association.

Student Government Association holding elections April 12-13

The Student Government Association will hold elections for 2018-2019 executive board and senate positions April 12-13. Online voting will be open from 7 a.m. Thursday through 10 p.m. Friday via Seahawk Connection.

In addition, a debate between the candidates for SGA president will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 11 in the DiStefano Lecture Hall.

The candidates are:

Nine seniors featured in annual honors thesis exhibition

Nine seniors from the Department of Art and Art History will showcase their work in the Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery April 12-25 during the annual Senior Honors Thesis Exhibition.

The focused exhibition features selections from thesis projects in graphic design, illustration, photography and film. Participating students include Amber Blanchette, Ming Fen Congdon, Mary Katherine Hickey, Elliott Hoekstra, Kaela Kennedy, Amber King, Taylor Lovrien, Taylor Marshall and Isabella Tomlinson.

An opening reception for the exhibition will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 12 in the gallery. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The gallery is closed on Mondays.

Educator Forum features recent graduates, experienced administrators

Recent education graduates and experienced administrators will share their experiences Thursday, April 12 during the Rhode Island Educator Forum, an annual collaborative event between Salve Regina and Roger Williams universities. The program will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Young Building.

The program will include panels of recent alumni and experienced administrators along with a networking reception for students, alumni, professionals and recruiters. The evening is designed to help students become better prepared for careers by hearing firsthand advice and insights.

Theater program presenting “Cabaret” April 11-15

The Department of Music, Theatre and Dance will present Kander and Ebb’s award-winning musical “Cabaret” at the Casino Theatre April 11-15. Directed by Tom Gleadow, performances will be given at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with 2 p.m. matinees Saturday and Sunday.

“Cabaret” features some of the most memorable songs in musical theater history, including “Cabaret,” “Willkommen” and “Maybe This Time.” Framed by the decadently dilapidated Kit Kat Klub, it’s an escape from reality presided over by The Emcee.

The musical sets a complicated love story between struggling novelist Cliff Bradshaw and nightclub singer Sally Bowles against the rise of the Nazi Party in 1930s Berlin. The affair between Cliff and Sally is doomed from the beginning, but equally if not more heartbreaking is the romance that develops between landlord Fraulein Schneider and boarder Herr Schultz. It’s a quietly devastating example of the anti-Semitic hate that ruined so many innocent lives.

Seven student-athletes earn weekly conference honors

Seven student-athletes from the men’s lacrosse, softball and track and field teams recently earned weekly honors from the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

Men’s lacrosse: Matt D’Amore ’18 and Andrew Fera ’18

D’Amore was named defensive player of the week after posting a goals-against average of 5.04 while combining to save 30 shots.  In a 7-6 win over SUNY Maritime he saved 18 shots, then saved 12 more against Nichols College on the way to an 11-5 victory. He finished the week with 75.0 save percentage.

Fera was named offensive player of the week after scoring four goals and fielding one ground ball in the wins over Maritime and Nichols. He also added an assist against Nichols, giving him nine points on the week.

The Seahawks (8-3, 2-1 CCC) take to the road Tuesday, April 10, when they face Wentworth Institute of Technology in another conference contest.

Softball: Elizabeth Lombardo ’19

Lombardo was named player of the week after posting an outstanding week at the plate and in the infield. In six games at the plate, she went a combined 10-for-20 (.500), hitting three doubles and one home run to account for seven runs batted in. Against the University of New England, she scored the game-tying run in the sixth, drove in the game-tying runs in the seventh, and scored the game-winning run on a walk-off double.

Salve Regina (7-11, 4-2 CCC) hosts Western New England University at 4 and 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 at Toppa Field.

Track and field: 4×100 relay team

The 4×100 relay team of Erin Gunther ’19, Natalie Kopiec ’19, Devin Smith ’18 and Madison Stanley ’20 was named team of the week after speeding to a second-place finish at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic. With a time of 53.56, they beat all but the hosts in the 13-team meet, helping the Seahawks to a sixth-place team finish.

The Seahawks compete in Manchester, New Hampshire on Saturday, April 14 at the Penmen Invitational hosted by Southern New Hampshire University.

Toby Stapleton named dean of graduate studies and continuing education

Dr. Tobias (Toby) Stapleton, assistant vice chancellor and director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, has been named dean of graduate studies and continuing education at Salve Regina. His appointment officially begins July 1.

Stapleton comes to Salve Regina with extensive experience in growing graduate enrollments, developing new graduate and corporate training programs, and partnering university resources with those in the private sector, state and federal government.

“I am excited about joining the Salve community because it is clear to me that Salve Regina University is an institution that puts the interests of its students first,” Stapleton said. “Salve Regina’s graduate and continuing education programs are tailored to deliver a terrific blend of theory and practice, and are well positioned to meet the needs of today’s graduate student.”

Under Stapleton’s leadership, the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship became internationally recognized for its work in the marine technology industry, developing new programs and operating self-sufficiently with more than $1.2 million in revenue.

In his prior position as assistant dean at the UMass Dartmouth Charlton College of Business, Stapleton helped to grow graduate enrollment from 120 to more than 400 students, and also developed two customized MBA programs in partnership with two of the region’s largest employers.

A recipient of Charlton College of Business’s MBA Association Teaching Excellence Award, Stapleton has taught both graduate and undergraduate courses in advanced supply chain management, global business, international logistics, corporate social responsibility, management information systems, quantitative analysis and management theory.

Stapleton has his B.A. in international studies from Bryant University, his MBA from Suffolk University, and both his M.A. and Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies from UMass Dartmouth. He also has a certificate in venture mentoring service from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Tickets for Commencement Week events now available

Tickets for all Commencement Week activities – ranging this year from a night at the Newport Blues Cafe to the highly anticipated Commencement Ball – are now available. Held each May between finals and graduation weekend, Commencement Week is one of Salve Regina’s most enduring traditions.

Featuring the Felix Brown Band, the senior social will be held at Newport Blues Cafe, located at 286 Thames St. Students may purchase one guest ticket for the event. Guests do not need to be Salve Regina students, but must be at least 21.

A portion of the ticket price will be donated as a Senior Challenge gift to the Spirit Fund. Due to limited capacity, guest tickets are not available for this event.

Commencement Ball

7 p.m. Thursday, May 17, Newport Marriott, $65

The 68th annual Commencement Ball will be held at the Newport Marriott, located at 25 America’s Cup Ave. Students may purchase one guest ticket for the event beginning Monday, April 23. Guests do not need to be Salve Regina students.

Students should check the ticketing website for meal selections. A cash bar will be available. Must be 21 and present valid ID to purchase alcohol.

Senior cocktail party

7 p.m. Friday, May 18, Ochre Court, $5

Passed hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. Must be 21 and present valid ID to purchase alcohol. Students may purchase one guest ticket for the event beginning Monday, April 23. Guests do not need to be Salve Regina students.
